Simulation Training in a Pediatric Residency Program

Simulation training is a useful training technique for all levels of medical education; however, little information is available regarding simulation training in the teaching of pediatric residents. Scott & White Hospital and the Texas A&M University System Health Science Center have developed a teaching program with an affiliated allied health school that uses patient simulators to train pediatric residents. The program has helped pediatric residents develop techniques to improve their care of acutely ill children by emphasizing Pediatric Advanced Life Support protocols through patient simulation; instruction from pediatric intensive care unit faculty augments the use of high-fidelity patient simulators. More research involving simulation training is needed to determine its effectiveness as a learning mechanism for pediatric residents.
