Abstract of Journal Article -- August 2002

Symposium on Medical Education

By Nancy W. Dickey, MD

Errors in medicine and the safety of patients have become very important issues in health care and are moving into the medical education arena. Teaching the next generation of physicians, nurses, and other health care providers about systems of care, teamwork, and methods of error reduction will improve the care of patients. Issues to be considered by the curriculum managers include communication, the team concept of care delivery, use of simulators and other technology aids in teaching, systems theory and its application to medicine, and the relationship between high-quality medicine and error reduction.
